I covered the narrative, with a lot more background information regarding the original Breguet 160, its story, loss, and eventual recovery. If you are interested in this particular story, I highly suggest checking out this article because the narrative of the reference 160 Marie Antoinette timepiece is one that all watch fans should know.More so, a number of elements of this history, both long ago and contemporary, of the 160 are still to a level mostly unknown to the public. It’s really a pure coincidence that Breguet introduced the Breguet 1160 Marie Antoinette pocket watch only months after the first 160 was discovered. It’s more than likely the most precious horological thing in existence.I mention the above coincidence because many individuals wrongly believed that the brand released the Breguet 1160 Marie Antoinette due to the re-discovery of the 160. This is wrong. Breguet had been secretly working on replicating the 160 for approximately five years up to that point. The modern Breguet brand is known because of its first creator Abraham-Louis Breguet. Often called the “grandfather” (or father) of modern watchmaking, the Breguet brand continued for many generations through various family members after his death. In the 1980s Breguet was introduced to existence in its own contemporary iteration via a fresh group of investors largely separated from the original Breguet family (though, today, parts of the first Breguet family are part of the new again). It was watch maker and designer Daniel Roth who formed the contemporary appearance of the brand’s wrist watches being inspired by historical Breguet pieces. Just something like 5,000 Breguet clocks and watches were produced during Abraham-Louis Breguet’s lifetime.
Now bigger and better than before, the Breguet boutique recently reopened in another location inside Marina Bay Sands, the casino and resort complex by Singapore’s financial district.
Almost 1500 square feet, the store is clad in Breguet’s redesigned interior decor, the second in Asia to sport the new look. But not everything inside is new: taking pride of place in the front corner is a rose engine from 1905, the type of machine used to create traditional guilloche on watch dials.
Similarly, while the store carries the full range of contemporary Breguet timepieces, including prototypes of new launches from Baselworld 2017 like the Tradition Dame 7038, a half dozen strong historical collection is also on hand for the opening.
On display till the middle of June, the historical collection includes pocket watch no. 2592, a quarter repeater made for the Turkish market in 1817 decorated in vivid red enamel with Eastern Arabic numerals on its dial.
Also notable is montre a tact from 1799. Covered brilliant blue enamel, the “tactful watch” indicates the time with a diamond-set arrow on its outside, allowing the owner to feel the time inside his pocket so as not to offend his guests by taking out his watch.
The Breguet boutique is located at:
#B2-236 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands
